How to Farm (4.5days)
A week-long immersion into life on the land
What to expect
Our How to Farm course is the course that we always wanted to attend but didn't exist. This course is as relevant to smallholders and small-scale producers as it is to new entrant farmers, existing farmers wanting to change, farm advisors and educators.
At Lynbreck, we share with you how we do it our way, showcasing what it takes to build and run a successful and diversified farming business, focussing on personal happiness, producing food, building soil and biodiversity and achieving and sustaining financial viability.
We teach modules that include working with pastured layers, cattle, rare breed pigs and bees as well as an introduction to setting up an on-farm micro butchery, all of which will also include indoor sessions on costs and income.
In other modules, we look at how to set up and run a business from scratch, sales and marketing as well as an introduction to setting your life goals and targets through our adapted framework of Holistic Management.
And of course, we teach modules on trees and agroforestry as well as fruit and veg growing in our kitchen garden and polycrub.
We live and work Lynbreck and we can’t imagine life any other way.
Your teachers will be crofters Lynn and Sandra who you will spend all week with. As well as learning from us, we offer complimentary catering using as much of our own croft-grown produce as possible, as well as sourcing as many organic ingredients as we can. This way you will be able to see, smell and taste the quality of what you can produce by farming in harmony with the land.
We offer free camping on site for the duration of the course. Facilities provided include a compost loo and access to a shower. If you prefer to stay in local accommodation, we can provide some recommendations, but we strongly recommend attendees join us for all meal sessions.
